Revolutionary AND Gangsta. gangsta rap existed before N.W.A. and it exists after....but N.W.A. is the epitome of the gangsta rap generation. While staying true to their roots in Compton, they amassed millions in sales AND garnered an immense amount of critical acclaim. Public Enemy in the east was more revolutionary, and the Geto Boys in the south were more gangsta (pound for pound), but it was N.W.A. that was the perfect medium between the two. In 1987, N.W.A. & The Posse came out to little or no recognition, but it was the following year, in ''88, when the shot was heard around the world. Straight Outta Compton. No one expected it, I doubt if the members even realized how tremendous this album would impact not only the world of hip hop but of all popular music. They pushed the limits with "Fuck the Police", a song pushing the boundries of the first amendment. This album is edgy and it still holds up all these years later, even after hundreds of watered down generic gangsta rappers followed in their footsteps.

Lyrics: Ice Cube and MC Ren really hold up lyrically. Dr.Dre is decent, but he is better behind the boards. Eazy-E has a nasal, high pitched voice that is quite entertaining, but u lose some respect finding out cube, ren, and the d.o.c. penned his lyrics. The lyrics are the prototype of modern gangsta rap.

Beats: Fresh. I was bumpin the cd the otherday and the beats sounded as fresh as anything today. Dr.Dre really delivers here, and this is why he has become so popular (not forgetting the classic, The Chronic). These beats predate the G-Funk era and they are raw! Check "Express Yourself"!

Favorite Tracks: "Straight Outta Compton", "Fuck the Police", "Express Yourself"

Overall: 10 / 10

I ain't listen to that in years, I might play it tonight.
